Stone Town's lanes were built for foot traffic and handcarts long before cars existed, so there is no realistic street parking inside the old town itself. Hotels either sit right at the edge with access to a car park nearby, or arrange a spot within a short walk. When we deliver your car, we agree the exact drop point with you in advance - usually a hotel forecourt, a guarded car park on the ring road around the peninsula, or a landmark you already know. It is a five to ten minute walk from most old-town accommodation, which is a fair trade for not having a rental agency office to visit.
If your hotel is genuinely inside the pedestrian core, we will tell you honestly at booking - sometimes it makes more sense to collect the car on your first excursion day rather than the day you land, and walk into town on arrival. We would rather be upfront about this than have you circling for a parking space that does not exist.
Once you have the car, Stone Town becomes the starting point for the whole island rather than the whole trip. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Forest, home to the red colobus monkeys found only in Zanzibar, is about 40 minutes south-east on tarmac roads - easy in any of our cars, including the Suzuki Alto. A north loop taking in Mangapwani slave caves and the beaches around Nungwi and Kendwa runs a little over an hour each way; the roads are decent tarmac until the last stretch, where a Jimny or RAV4 handles the sandy tracks to the shoreline more comfortably. Heading east to the kite beaches of Paje and Jambiani is around 50-55 minutes, mostly on the main cross-island road.
Driving is on the left, a legacy of British rule, and the main routes out of Stone Town are decent tarmac with occasional police checkpoints - keep your permit and licence handy and you will be waved through without fuss.
